Airbus Readies Racer Eco-Mode, Explores Military Maneuvers
Airbus plans to flight-test the Racer compound rotorcraft demonstrator's Eco-Mode before the end of 2026 while examining maneuvers relevant to military operations. The system puts one of the aircraft's two engines on standby during cruise and uses an electric fast-restart capability to restore power within seconds. Airbus projects an additional 15 percent fuel reduction at approximately 330 kilometers per hour, following trials of slope landings, rapid climbs and high-speed turns. Military pilots from France, Germany and Finland have evaluated the demonstrator under the European Next Generation Rotorcraft Technologies program, supporting assessment of potential future military applications.
