Are Chinese military aircraft already using a new joint air facility in Laos?

Satellite imagery has raised questions about the presence of Chinese military aircraft at Ban Keun Airport in Laos following the opening of a joint Chinese-Lao aviation training facility in September 2026. Images taken around September 30 reportedly show eight K-8 or JL-8 jet trainers and light-attack aircraft alongside more than two dozen military and support vehicles, exceeding Laos's previously reported K-8 fleet. The China-Laos Friendship Aviation Academy and associated support facilities were inaugurated on September 29 as bilateral military aviation cooperation expanded. The imagery does not conclusively establish whether the aircraft belong to China or Laos or whether Chinese combat aviation units are based there.
