Bulgaria's $2 billion military modernization brings 183 new Stryker vehicles and local assembly to strengthen NATO's eastern flank
Bulgaria's roughly $2 billion modernization program will introduce 183 Stryker armored vehicles along with Javelin missiles, ammunition, training and support, with deliveries expected by the end of 2028. The package includes local assembly and maintenance work intended to build Bulgarian industrial capacity and improve long-term sustainment. Eight vehicles transferred through the U.S. Excess Defense Articles program arrived in February 2026, helping the 61st Mechanized Brigade begin familiarization as the larger fleet is prepared to strengthen NATO forces on the alliance's southeastern flank. The program is among Bulgaria's largest recent defense investments.
