Carrier USS Nimitz completes PAS flight deck certification to prepare for pilot qualification operations

USS Nimitz completed Precision Approach Landing Systems certification between October 5 and 8 during an underway period following its homeport move to Naval Station Norfolk. The system supports night and adverse-weather carrier landings by guiding pilots into position for their approaches, with support from the ship's combat systems department and Carrier Air Traffic Control Center. Certification and crew training prepare the carrier for forthcoming East Coast qualification periods under Commander, Naval Air Force Atlantic. Nimitz, assigned to Carrier Strike Group 8, will support student naval aviators gaining their first experience landing aboard an operational aircraft carrier.
