China Reveals Warship Acoustic Database to Help Submarines Track U.S. Navy Ships Near Taiwan

China's navy has built an operational database of ship acoustic signatures to help submarine crews classify and reacquire surface targets in noisy waters. The defence ministry said stored frequency, speed and other characteristics were used in exercises after course changes and wave noise disrupted contact. Such a library can improve the usefulness of sonar detections and training, but it does not itself extend sensor range. Chinese officials did not claim that individual US warships are uniquely identified, that artificial intelligence automates classification or that the database is shared in real time, leaving important performance details unverified.
