Delivery of UK's future tank capability remains uncertain

The United Kingdom has not confirmed that the Challenger 3 programme will meet its planned 2027 in-service date, amid reported problems with the turret gear mechanism and an ongoing review and reapproval process. The uncertainty therefore affects delivery of the current tank upgrade as well as the Army's longer-term armored capability planning. The government has also not decided what combination of crewed tanks, uncrewed systems and protected-fire capabilities could replace Challenger 3 when the fleet approaches retirement in the 2040s.
