F-15 Japan Super Interceptor programme gains traction
Japan's F-15 Japan Super Interceptor modernization is progressing, but completion of the first 20 aircraft, including two test jets, has moved from fiscal 2027 to fiscal 2029. Boeing serves as the U.S. foreign-military-sales prime while Mitsubishi Heavy Industries performs modification and integration work in Japan. The broader program could eventually cover 68 operational fighters plus two test aircraft, adding improved avionics, weapons integration and support infrastructure to preserve a capable long-range air-defense and strike fleet as newer combat aircraft enter service. Cost growth and scheduling remain important execution risks for Tokyo.
