Fincantieri Lays Keel of Second U212NFS Submarine

Fincantieri laid the keel of Italy’s second U212 Near Future Submarine at its Muggiano shipyard, advancing a four-boat programme managed through OCCAR. The submarine incorporates lithium-ion batteries, an updated combat-management system, increased Italian equipment content, and design changes intended to improve endurance, stealth, cyber resilience, and operational flexibility. Delivery of the second boat is scheduled for 2030 after assembly, launch, harbour trials, and sea trials. The milestone supports Italy’s replacement of older submarines but does not indicate that the vessel is near operational fleet service.
