For China, H-6N bomber enhances nuclear deterrence and second-strike capability

Chinese state media released rare recent footage of an H-6N bomber carrying the nuclear-capable Jing Lei-1 air-launched ballistic missile during a joint anti-ship exercise. The H-6N is a modernized variant of China’s only strategic bomber and adds an airborne nuclear-delivery option to land-based intercontinental missiles and submarine-launched weapons. Its ability to carry the JL-1 is presented as completing China’s nuclear triad and strengthening a survivable second-strike posture. The disclosure also follows broader H-6 operations, including a 2024 joint patrol near Alaska with Russian Tu-95 bombers.
