Four Options Emerge For U.S. Army UH-72A Trainer Future

Airbus and the US Army are discussing four options for reassigning 215 UH-72A Lakota training helicopters as Robinson R66 aircraft take over their training role. The alternatives identified include transferring aircraft in their existing configuration to Army National Guard units and converting selected helicopters for autonomous logistics or strike missions. The discussions concern reuse of an existing airframe fleet, with autonomous conversion requiring additional equipment and integration work rather than representing an already fielded capability. Airbus described the alternatives in October 2026, but the Army has not announced a final fleet allocation, conversion contract or implementation schedule for these options.
