Germany Backs Emden Naval Base to Relieve Wilhelmshaven and Reach High North

Germany has chosen Emden for a new naval base, Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced on October 5, providing additional North Sea capacity alongside Wilhelmshaven. The proposed Rysumer Nacken site at the Ems estuary offers room for expanded berthing and access to operations in the North Sea and North Atlantic. Plans envisage up to 2,000 service positions, with operational readiness targeted for the early 2030s and implementation through Niedersachsen Ports. A letter of intent begins the development process, so the decision establishes the location and planning direction rather than a completed base or an immediately available operational facility.
