Greece and Italy Ink Deal for Two FREMM Frigates

Greece and Italy signed an implementing arrangement covering the transfer of two Italian Navy FREMM frigates, including technical, financial, support and industrial-participation terms. Carlo Bergamini is planned for delivery in the first half of 2028, followed by Virginio Fasan in the first half of 2029. Informed estimates place the ships’ combined cost below €500 million before ammunition. The acquisition will add modern area-air-defense and anti-submarine capacity while allowing Greece to expand its surface fleet faster than an entirely new-build program and reduce near-term procurement risk.
