Industrial teams prepare roadmap for Indonesia aircraft carrier transformation

Fincantieri and PT PAL signed a memorandum of understanding in Jakarta on September 24 to develop a modernization framework for Indonesia's aircraft carrier KRI Sriwijaya, formerly Giuseppe Garibaldi. The industrial roadmap addresses adaptation of the former Italian Navy vessel for Indonesian requirements, including uncrewed aircraft operations and communications upgrades. The ship can accommodate UAVs, while the proposed transformation remains subject to further engineering and implementation decisions. The agreement establishes cooperation between the original builder and Indonesia's state-owned shipyard, but does not itself specify a funded conversion contract, final equipment package or completion date.
