NATO tests layered counter-drone defences in Romania to strengthen integrated air and missile defence capabilities

NATO conducted a layered counter-drone defense exercise in Romania, testing the integration of kinetic, electronic, and directed-energy countermeasures within the alliance's integrated air and missile defense architecture. The exercise validated multi-layer intercept protocols against a range of UAS threat types including loitering munitions and commercial drone swarms. Romania's geographic position as a frontline NATO state makes it a priority testbed for eastern flank air defense concepts. Results will inform NATO's emerging Counter-UAS doctrine and equipment standards.
