New Commons committee to scrutinise nuclear spending

The British government plans a new House of Commons committee, appointed by the prime minister, to scrutinize Defence Nuclear Enterprise programs and expenditure. The body is intended to strengthen public confidence as the enterprise operates with a ring-fenced budget and greater delegated authority. Nuclear spending reached £12 billion in 2025-26, with more than £100 billion expected to flow through British suppliers over the next decade and an additional £20 billion planned through 2029-30. The announcement establishes the oversight intention, but membership, powers, reporting arrangements, and a start date have not yet been published.
