North Korea Tests Ballistic Missile With 700 Km Flight That May Mask Longer Range Strike Capability
North Korea launched a ballistic missile from the Wonsan area on October 3, 2026, with South Korea reporting a flight of more than 700 kilometers toward the East Sea. Japan estimated approximately 680 kilometers of travel and a maximum altitude of about 90 kilometers, providing a different measurement of the same launch. Authorities were assessing whether the weapon belonged to the Hwasong-11 tactical missile family or was a longer-range system flown below its maximum range. An intermediate-range classification remained under review, so the observed flight distance alone did not establish the missile’s full strike capability.
