Pentagon plans to install nuclear micro modular reactor at naval facility by September 2028

The U.S. Department of War plans to install a commercially owned and operated advanced nuclear Micro Modular Reactor at Naval Weapons Station Crane, Indiana, no later than September 2028. The reactor is intended to provide continuous power independent of the commercial grid for critical defence-technology and weapons operations at the installation. The Army's Project Janus is executing the effort with Navy energy officials, the Office of the Under Secretary of War for Research and Engineering, the Defense Innovation Unit and Indiana. The announcement identifies no vendor, reactor design, electrical output or project cost, and safety, environmental, regulatory and installation approvals remain necessary.
