Robot boat found its way in the Solent without satellites
Voyant Innovations demonstrated satellite-independent navigation aboard a Kraken K3 Scout uncrewed surface vessel in the Solent on October 5 for the UK Ministry of Defence. The University of Liverpool spin-out's software used particle-filter algorithms to compare live radar imagery with stored coastline and terrain maps, calculating the vessel's position without Global Navigation Satellite System input. The trial forms part of defense efforts to develop alternative positioning for environments where satellite signals are disrupted or congested. It demonstrated radar-based maritime navigation on an autonomous platform, rather than announcing a fleet deployment or procurement contract.
