South Korea approves development of a new army VTOL drone

South Korea's Defense Acquisition Program Promotion Committee approved development of a new vertical-takeoff-and-landing reconnaissance drone for the Army. The aircraft is intended to operate from confined or mountainous terrain where runway-dependent systems are difficult to deploy, while providing improved surveillance range and persistence. Vertical launch could give dispersed units organic intelligence without extensive ground infrastructure. The approval authorizes a development effort rather than immediate fielding, so performance targets, prototype trials, communications security, sensor integration, production decisions, and unit training must be completed before an operational fleet is available.
