South Korean Hypersonic Glide Vehicle Hits Target in First Flight Test
South Korea’s Agency for Defense Development conducted the first flight test of an indigenously developed hypersonic glide vehicle on October 8, 2026, with President Lee Jae Myung observing the event. A booster launched the vehicle from a barge, after which the glider separated, sustained hypersonic flight, maneuvered vertically and laterally, and struck its designated target. The test assessed key technologies including thermal protection, guidance and low-altitude maneuvering rather than demonstrating an operational weapon. South Korean authorities did not disclose the vehicle’s speed, range, launch site or planned deployment schedule.
