Steel to be cut on first new generation British attack sub

Britain plans to cut steel for its first SSN-AUKUS nuclear-powered attack submarine in 2027, formally beginning production of the class that will replace the Royal Navy’s Astute boats. The design is being developed with Australia and the United States and is intended to combine long endurance, advanced sensors, strike weapons and compatibility with allied systems. The UK remains focused on delivering its lead submarine in the late 2030s, a schedule that depends on sustained investment in Barrow shipyard capacity, reactor production, suppliers and the specialized workforce.
