Sweden Formalizes Interim Submarine Training and Södermanland Lease for Poland
Sweden has formalised agreements for Polish submarine crew training and the lease of HMS Södermanland as an interim capability under Poland's Orka programme. The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration and navy will support 18 months of training in Karlskrona, where the first Polish crews are already receiving instruction. Södermanland is an upgraded A17-class submarine fitted with Stirling air-independent propulsion, and Sweden will provide maintenance and sustainment support during the lease. The arrangement gives Polish personnel experience with Swedish submarine operations ahead of the planned delivery of three Saab A26 boats, with the first new submarine scheduled to arrive in 2031.
