U.S. Air National Guard brings F-35A to Barnes, replacing F-15 Eagle and reinforcing Massachusetts’ 24-hour homeland defense mission

The Massachusetts Air National Guard formally introduced the F-35A at Barnes Air National Guard Base on September 13, beginning replacement of the F-15 Eagle. The 104th Fighter Wing had operated the F-15 for 18 years and maintains a continuous homeland-defence alert mission. F-35A sensors, data fusion and low-observable design will modernise that role while connecting the unit more closely with other fifth-generation forces. The ceremony marks the start of a transition rather than immediate full capability, which will depend on aircraft deliveries, conversion training and supporting infrastructure.
