U.S. destroyer enters Spanish dry dock, a first in Europe
The U.S. Navy destroyer USS Arleigh Burke entered a Navantia dry dock in Cádiz, Spain, on October 7, 2026, for planned maintenance and modernization work. The availability is the first regional dry-docking of one of the forward-deployed U.S. destroyers based at Naval Station Rota since that force began operating from Spain more than a decade ago. USS Arleigh Burke is one of five Rota-based destroyers supporting U.S. and NATO missions, including ballistic-missile-defence and broader maritime operations in Europe. The event tests a more localized maintenance model for the forward fleet rather than representing a new ship acquisition or combat deployment.
