U.S. Navy Deploys USS Canberra Warship and P-8A Aircraft to Philippines for South China Sea Exercise

The littoral combat ship USS Canberra and a US Navy P-8A Poseidon joined vessels and personnel from seven regional partners for maritime activity based around Subic Bay. The September 20 event opened an ASEAN Defence Ministers' Meeting-Plus working-group exercise co-hosted by Japan and the Philippines. Participants are practicing cooperative maritime security, information sharing, interoperability and humanitarian-assistance procedures, with the P-8A contributing long-range patrol and surveillance capability. The deployment demonstrates multilateral coordination in the South China Sea, but the reported activity is an exercise rather than a new permanent basing arrangement.
