U.S. Navy Explores Littoral Combat Ships as Forward Bases for Marine AH-1Z Viper Attack Helicopters
USS Canberra operated with a Marine Corps AH-1Z Viper from HMLA-367 during its Western Pacific deployment, demonstrating attack-helicopter integration aboard an Independence-class littoral combat ship. Navy imagery shows a landing and subsequent departure in the Philippine Sea on October 1, followed by departure preparations at White Beach, Okinawa, on October 5. The activity provides practical experience with deck handling and temporary launch and recovery operations as Navy and Marine units examine distributed aviation support. No permanent AH-1Z detachment aboard littoral combat ships has been announced, and their aviation sustainment capacity remains more limited than that of large amphibious ships.
