U.S. sends unmanned systems to Guantanamo for new command

US Southern Command deployed unmanned systems to Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, establishing a site for training and mission support under its new SOUTHCOM Autonomous Warfare Command (SAWC). Created on April 21, 2026, the command is developing the integration of autonomous, semi-autonomous and remotely operated platforms across maritime, air and land domains. The Guantanamo facility will support platform integration, personnel training and operational learning as capabilities are introduced in phases. The deployment also supports Joint Task Force Western Hemisphere, activated on August 4 to coordinate regional counter-cartel operations, connecting current mission requirements with development of the command’s wider autonomous capabilities.
