US Air Force has a $14 billion supply hole, service officials say

U.S. Air Force leaders identified a $14 billion aircraft-parts shortfall as supply-related groundings rose 87 percent over seven years. About 53 percent of the fleet is more than 30 years old and 55 percent has exceeded its planned useful life, increasing pressure on sustainment accounts; the fiscal 2027 request includes $4.2 billion for the activity group managing spares and backlogs. The service is pursuing better forecasting, additive manufacturing, long-term contracts and multiple suppliers, while the North Star campaign shows how concentrated parts funding can raise B-52 readiness.
