US FCC proposes to open more wireless spectrum for space-based wireless service

The United States Federal Communications Commission proposed opening more than 1,000 megahertz of spectrum in the 12 GHz and 42 GHz bands for space-based broadband. The order, scheduled for a September 30 vote, would support home, aircraft and ship connectivity as well as traffic routing through satellite ground networks. The FCC also proposed updated ultra-wideband rules and permitting reforms for communications infrastructure. Greater capacity could improve inter-satellite resilience and competition, but implementation depends on commission approval, technical coordination and protections for incumbent users rather than taking effect immediately.
