US 'not prepared' to respond to nuclear attacks in space, report says

A new wargaming report concludes that the United States lacks a tested, government-wide response for a nuclear detonation in space. Such an event could disable satellites over a broad area through radiation and electromagnetic effects, disrupt military and civilian services, and create difficult questions about attribution, escalation, and proportional retaliation. The study does not say U.S. forces have no relevant capabilities; rather, it finds that decision-makers have not adequately rehearsed the cross-agency policies, communications, and response options needed to manage a crisis whose effects would cross military, commercial, and allied space systems.
