US Treasury targets Iran's aviation sector with sweeping new sanctions

The United States imposed 36 new Iran-related sanctions targeting the country’s aviation sector and the foreign procurement networks that support it. The Treasury designated 27 Iranian airlines and separately sanctioned several firms and intermediaries in Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, Malaysia and Kazakhstan that it says assisted Iranian carriers or helped obtain United States-origin aircraft and sensitive technology. It also suspended three aviation authorizations and instructed financial institutions to report procurement networks supporting the sector. The measures are intended to isolate Mahan Air and other Iranian carriers from international finance, supplies and commercial aviation services.
