Why Israel Wants More One-Ton Bombs From the U.S.

The proposed $2.8 billion US package for Israel comprises 60,000 one-ton munitions: 20,000 Mk-84 bombs, 20,000 BLU-117 bombs, and 20,000 I-2000 Penetrator warheads. The Mk-84 and BLU-117 can be configured for surface or underground targets, while the I-2000 uses a heavier casing to penetrate soil, rock, or concrete before detonation. The planned transfer has drawn opposition because one-ton weapons create extensive blast and fragmentation effects when used in populated areas. Representative Gregory Meeks placed an informal hold on the sale while seeking assurances on compliance with US law and civilian protection.
