Why Ukraine Now Prefers Unguided 155 mm Artillery Shells Over Guided Ones

Some Ukrainian artillery units increasingly favor conventional 155-millimeter shells for many missions because they are cheaper, more available and suitable for sustained fires than scarce precision-guided rounds. Commanders are shifting part of the accuracy burden to improved guns, digital fire control and drone observers that detect targets and correct impacts, allowing standard ammunition to achieve useful effects through repeated adjustment. The choice also reflects the vulnerability of satellite-guided projectiles such as Excalibur to Russian electronic warfare, but guided ammunition still retains value for targets and conditions where its precision can be exploited.
