Rheinmetall Argotec Satellite in Orbit to Flag Air Threats Before Launch
Rheinmetall Italia and Italian space company Argotec placed their first jointly developed military-surveillance satellite into orbit on October 1, 2026, aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 launched from Vandenberg Space Force Base. Rather than conventional ground mapping, the spacecraft’s sensors are designed to detect ground-based indicators of emerging airborne threats and provide early-warning data for air defense. Artificial intelligence will support processing of imagery and situational data for integration with national defense systems, ground nodes, tactical networks and a command-and-control post. The mission will validate performance in orbit and underpin a modular constellation, with a second satellite launch planned for 2028.
