European Rearmament: €800B Plan Meets a Lagging Industrial Base
The European Union’s ReArm Europe, or Readiness 2030, framework aims to mobilize up to €800 billion in additional defense spending, including €150 billion in loans through the SAFE instrument. Converting that financing into military capability will depend on expanding factories, skilled labor, supply chains and long-term orders across ammunition, missiles, armored vehicles, air defense and other priority sectors. Without coordinated procurement and predictable demand, larger budgets could raise prices and extend backlogs rather than quickly increasing output, leaving a gap between Europe’s political ambition and its industrial delivery capacity.
