France accelerates next-generation fighter programme towards full-scale development
France plans to begin full-scale development of its next-generation fighter in 2029, following a second demonstration phase starting in 2027. Documents accompanying the proposed 2027 defense budget set out the timetable for a Rafale successor as France continues the program without Germany following the breakdown of cooperation in June 2026. The government decided in July to develop domestically the key technologies previously assigned to foreign partners, a position confirmed to parliament on October 8. Paris intends to preserve research and technologies already produced through the partnership while containing costs and maintaining the program's planned schedule.
