Finland joins French nuclear deterrence initiative, opening path to joint drills and temporary deployments of French strategic air forces
Finland joined France’s Forward Nuclear Deterrence Initiative on September 14, becoming the tenth participating European country. The framework allows consultation, joint exercises and potentially temporary deployments of French nuclear-capable air assets, while France’s president retains sole authority over any nuclear use. Helsinki says participation complements NATO deterrence and does not change Finland’s longstanding national policy against stationing nuclear weapons on its territory in peacetime. The decision deepens Nordic regional involvement in France’s effort to give European allies a clearer role around its independent strategic forces.
