Leonardo tests land version of its 40mm naval gun
A newly published photograph appears to show Leonardo’s Hystrix 40 ADS counter-drone gun undergoing testing, following the system’s unveiling in February 2026. The land-based design adapts the Marlin 40 naval turret in its Independent Line of Sight configuration, combining a 40 mm L70 cannon with an electro-optical director incorporating daylight and infrared cameras and a laser rangefinder. Leonardo plans programmable airburst and proximity-fuzed ammunition for engaging drones and other low-flying threats within its Michelangelo Dome architecture. The 40 mm design forms the middle layer of a planned family that also includes 76 mm and 30 mm gun systems, with a prototype targeted for 2026.
