French defense contractor Thales to open Japan maintenance base
French defense and aerospace company Thales plans to establish an equipment maintenance and operational-support base in Japan, adding a local sustainment presence to its activities in the country. The proposed facility is intended to handle support for defense equipment in Japan rather than serving as an announced new weapons-production plant or a transfer of an existing manufacturing program. Establishing in-country maintenance capacity would provide a point of contact for service work and reduce reliance on overseas support arrangements where applicable. The reported plan does not specify which systems the base will maintain, its location, financial investment, staffing or opening date.
