A new medical device designed for combat casualty care is capable of collecting blood from a wound and re-infusing it directly into the patient, rather than absorbing it. The technology addresses a critical survivability gap in battlefield trauma management by enabling autotransfusion in austere forward environments where blood products may be unavailable. The device is intended to improve survival rates from severe hemorrhagic wounds, which remain a leading cause of preventable death in combat, and is reportedly under evaluation for military medical application.
