Britain leads biggest NATO undersea effort since Cold War
The United Kingdom is leading NATO’s Allied Underwater Battlespace Mission Network, an alliance effort to connect sensors, crewed ships and uncrewed systems into a common undersea operating architecture. The initiative is intended to link frigates, autonomous underwater vehicles, surface relay nodes and satellite communications so participating navies can share data for submarine detection, seabed awareness, mine warfare and critical-infrastructure protection. British officials describe it as NATO’s most significant multinational undersea-domain-awareness effort since the Cold War and compare the concept to an underwater Internet of Things. The program is an interoperability and network-development initiative rather than a single exercise or equipment purchase.
