EU Tests Weaponized Drone Response After a Hostile Drone Is Shot Down
The European Defence Agency tested coordination after the interception of a weaponized drone during the European Vigilant Shield tabletop exercise in Portugal. Held at Santa Margarida from September 28 to October 2, 2026, the exercise considered scenarios involving remaining explosives and chemical or radioactive contamination after a hostile drone was neutralized. Counter-drone, command, explosive-ordnance disposal, hazardous-material and technical-exploitation specialists examined threat assessment, safe handling, component recovery and preservation of evidence. The results will inform procedures and doctrine, with a follow-on wargame planned for 2027 and a field trial for 2028.
