Competitive P17B tender marks a shift in Indian Navy frigate procurement
India's planned Project 17B frigate competition is expected to depart from earlier nominated-shipyard procurement by requiring domestic yards to compete for construction work. The design is intended to build on the Project 17A Nilgiri class with greater weapons capacity and improved combat systems, while sustaining multiple Indian naval shipbuilders. Competitive construction could broaden industrial participation and improve schedule or pricing discipline, but the program may still depend on foreign propulsion, sensors, weapons, and other key subsystems, leaving supply-chain localization as a central acquisition challenge throughout production.
