UK deepens reliance on Musk's SpaceX, spending nearly $40 million on satellite services
The United Kingdom has spent nearly $40 million on SpaceX satellite services, including about 1,000 Starshield terminals and 500 Starlink terminals for defense use. Starshield provides a military-oriented service with dedicated terminals, gateways, encryption and traffic priority, while Starlink adds widely available low-orbit connectivity that can support deployed units and resilient command links. The procurement offers rapid capacity but deepens dependence on a private US operator, creating policy questions around assurance, sovereignty and continuity; resilient military communications will still require contractual safeguards, protected ground infrastructure and alternative pathways if service is degraded or denied.
