Desolate Arctic outpost likely to host US troops under new Greenland deal
Mestersvig, a remote Danish outpost in eastern Greenland, could become a new U.S. military foothold under the security agreement signed by the United States, Denmark, and Greenland. The site lies 240 kilometers from the nearest settlement, currently has three soldiers, and includes barracks for about 150 personnel overlooking the strategically important Greenland-Iceland-United Kingdom gap. The agreement permits new U.S. bases at Mestersvig and Narsarsuaq but sets no troop numbers or timetable, leaving the scale of construction and permanent presence to later planning and parliamentary approval.
