Britain contracts drone-ship sensors to track air threats
Britain placed Project HORUS under contract to develop persistent air-search sensors for uncrewed maritime platforms. Deploying radar or related surveillance equipment on drone ships could extend coverage beyond the horizon, fill gaps between crewed vessels, and keep personnel away from exposed positions. The concept supports a distributed Royal Navy sensor network in which detections are shared with ships, aircraft, and command centres. The contract advances development rather than confirming a fully operational fleet, and success will depend on sensor performance, power, endurance, communications resilience, autonomy, and integration with existing combat systems.
