New U.S. Navy destroyer honors a D-Day Coast Guard hero
The future USS Quentin Walsh, DDG-132, has reached the Land Level erection stage at General Dynamics Bath Iron Works in Maine. At this point, large prefabricated sections of the Flight III Arleigh Burke-class destroyer are joined into the ship's hull before launch. The vessel is named for Coast Guard Captain Quentin R. Walsh, who received the Navy Cross for actions at Cherbourg after the D-Day landings. Walsh helped secure the port by persuading German forces that he commanded a much larger unit, contributing to the surrender of 350 troops and the release of 53 Allied prisoners.
