Why Japan’s Industry is Pulling Back from the U.S. Navy Frigate Plan
Japanese industry is showing reluctance to join a proposed US Navy frigate effort built around foreign designs because domestic yards already face tight capacity, delivery commitments and complex export constraints. Washington is considering options including Japan's Mogami-derived New FFM, South Korea's Chungnam class and Türkiye's Istanbul class, potentially building initial ships overseas before shifting production to the United States. No design has been selected, and a study is due in November 2026; industrial availability, technology transfer, US legal requirements and the Navy's ability to avoid redesign will be as decisive as ship performance.
