AUKUS
Daily updates on AUKUS Pillar 1 (nuclear-powered submarines) and Pillar 2 (advanced capabilities) cooperation between Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
Announced in September 2021, AUKUS binds Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States into a strategic technology partnership aimed at the Indo-Pacific. Pillar 1 delivers conventionally-armed, nuclear-powered submarines to the Royal Australian Navy: an interim sale of three to five Virginia-class boats from the early 2030s, then construction of a new SSN-AUKUS class jointly developed with the UK from the 2040s. Pillar 2 extends cooperation to undersea autonomy, hypersonic weapons, AI, quantum, and electronic warfare. Funding pressures, U.S. submarine industrial-base capacity, and political continuity in all three capitals remain the program's principal risks.
