NATO's eastern flank has been transformed since Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The 2022 Madrid summit upgraded Enhanced Forward Presence battlegroups in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, and Slovakia, with brigade-strength formations and pre-positioned equipment becoming the new baseline. Poland is racing toward a 300,000-strong army equipped with Abrams M1A2 SEPv3, K2 Black Panther, K9 howitzers, HIMARS, and F-35s. The Suwalki Gap, the narrow corridor between Belarus and Kaliningrad linking the Baltic states to Poland, remains the alliance's most operationally sensitive geography. Sweden's accession in March 2024 and Finland's in 2023 redrew Baltic Sea defense fundamentals.
